About
Raymond Serra, born Aurelio Lacagnina on August 13, 1936, in Little Italy, New York City, was an American character actor and writer whose career in theater, film, and television spanned three decades. He died on June 20, 2003. Serra grew up in New York, later relocating to Staten Island, and demonstrated early artistic ability by performing on the violin at Carnegie Hall at the age of eight. He went on to attend Wagner College before pursuing a professional acting career.
Serra's Broadway work extended from 1976 to 1992 and encompassed both performance and writing. His most notable stage contribution was Manny, a 1979 biographical drama about Edward G. Robinson, for which he served as both writer and performer. He also appeared in the play The Front Page, as well as the musical Legs Diamond, written by Harvey Fierstein, in 1988. His final Broadway credit came with 3 from Brooklyn, a 1992 musical by Sandi Merle, in which he played Cosmo the Cabbie.
Beyond his Broadway appearances, Serra accumulated additional stage credits throughout his career. In 1978, he appeared in Momma's Little Angels by Louis LaRusso II, taking on the role of the family doctor, Carillo. He performed in Marlow, a musical by Leo Rost, in 1981, and appeared in Dario Fo's Accidental Death of an Anarchist in 1984. His work across theater was complemented by roles in film and television throughout his career.
Serra and his wife, Gayle, had four children.
