About
Raymond J. Bloomer (December 9, 1886 – November 1, 1948) was an American actor whose career spanned stage and screen across several decades. Born in Rochester, New York, he left his hometown at the age of 18 after receiving a scholarship to study music at a conservatory in New York City. His transition into acting came about by chance when another student's illness created an opening in a play, and Bloomer stepped in to fill the role. That opportunity set him on a path toward a professional stage career.
Before establishing himself on Broadway, Bloomer built his experience performing with stock theater companies in several cities, including Buffalo, Detroit, and Montreal. His Broadway career ran from 1910 to 1921 and encompassed a wide range of productions. He made his Broadway debut in Naughty Marietta in 1910, and subsequent credits included The Revue of Revues and The Duchess, both in 1911, followed by Baron Trenck in 1912. He appeared in A Good Little Devil in 1913 and returned to Broadway with The Squab Farm in 1918. His later stage work included King Richard II, Macbeth, and the play Swords, all produced in the early 1920s.
Alongside his stage work, Bloomer pursued a career in film, appearing in 22 productions between 1913 and 1927. His screen work included productions made for Vitagraph, one of the prominent film studios of the era.
