About

Ray Fisher is an American actor born on September 8, 1987, in Baltimore, Maryland. He grew up in Lawnside, New Jersey, raised by his mother and grandmother, and attended Haddon Heights High School, where he worked at the concession stand of a Cinemark theater in Somerdale. His introduction to performance came through his high school English and history teachers, who guided him toward musical theatre. His earliest stage work included productions of Into the Woods, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, and Guys and Dolls. He later trained at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy.

Fisher's early professional stage career included a 2008 appearance as Dr. Marcus Blake in the musical Attorney for the Damned at the off-off-Broadway Kraine Theater. The following year he performed in a production of Macbeth at the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey. He went on to appear in a 2010 McCarter Theatre Center production of Will Power's Fetch Clay, Make Man in a minor role, and later performed with the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey in a production of To Kill a Mockingbird. His stage work also encompassed productions of King Lear and Cymbeline at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. In 2013, he took on the role of Muhammad Ali in an off-Broadway production of Fetch Clay, Make Man at the New York Theatre Workshop, gaining approximately 20 pounds of muscle in preparation for the physically demanding part.

Fisher made his Broadway debut in 2022 in a revival of August Wilson's The Piano Lesson, playing the role of Lymon. The performance earned him a nomination for the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Play in 2023. He subsequently reprised the role in a 2024 film adaptation of the play.

On screen, Fisher first appeared as Victor Stone, also known as Cyborg, in a cameo in the 2016 film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, a character noted as the first Black superhero in the DC Extended Universe. He expanded the role in Justice League in 2017 and again in Zack Snyder's Justice League in 2021, for which he filmed new footage in October 2020. In 2020, Fisher publicly accused director Joss Whedon of abusive and unprofessional conduct during the production of Justice League, and in December of that year described DC Films executive Walter Hamada as an enabler, stating he would not participate in productions associated with Hamada. In January 2021, Fisher stated he had been removed from the film The Flash due to Hamada's involvement.

In television, Fisher starred in the third season of the HBO anthology crime drama True Detective in 2019. In 2022, he portrayed Gene Mobley, the husband of activist Mamie Till-Mobley, in the ABC limited series Women of the Movement. That same year he appeared in the 2023 fantasy film Rebel Moon, playing a warrior named Darrian Bloodaxe, reuniting with director Zack Snyder.
