About

Frederick Randle Ayrton was born on 9 August 1869 in Chester, England, and died on 28 May 1940. A British actor of both stage and screen, he also worked as a producer and director over the course of his career.

Ayrton came from a family of considerable distinction. His father, William Frances Ayrton, was a wealthy wine merchant and co-founder of the firm Ayrton & Groome. His mother, Pauline, was born Fleischmann. Two of his full brothers achieved their own prominence: William Ayrton (1861–1916) was an artist based in Suffolk, and Maxwell Ayrton (1874–1960) became a leading architect. The family's roots lay in Yorkshire, where Ayrton's forebear Edward Ayrton served as mayor of Ripon in 1760. Ayrton received his education at The King's School in Chester and later at Geneva University.

He made his stage debut in 1890 at the Old Avenue Theatre in London, launching a career that remained active on both the London and American stages into the late 1930s. Among his London appearances was a role in the 1918 comedy The Freedom of the Seas at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket. His Broadway career spanned 1920 to 1924 and included appearances in the plays Hassan and One.

Ayrton entered the film industry in 1913 through the London Film Company and successfully navigated the transition from silent films to sound pictures. He worked across multiple studios and took on roles as both producer and director of several productions. His screen credits include Profit and the Loss (1917), Chu-Chin-Chow (1923), Nell Gwyn (1926), His House in Order (1928), The Manxman (1929), Dreyfus (1931), Jew Suss (1934), and Talk of the Devil (1936), among many others.
