About
Ralston Hill (April 24, 1927 – October 19, 1996) was an American stage actor and singer whose Broadway career spanned two decades, from 1961 to 1981. Born Richard Ralston Hill in Cleveland, Ohio, he grew up in Oberlin, Ohio, where he completed his secondary education at Oberlin High School in 1945. He went on to study at the University of Missouri and later at Oberlin College, earning his degree in 1950. He subsequently trained at the American Theater Wing School in New York City, completing his studies there in 1952 and moving directly into summer stock theatre work in Florida.
Hill is perhaps best known for originating the role of Congressional Secretary Charles Thomson in the musical 1776 on Broadway, a production that stands among his most prominent credits. He reprised that role in the 1972 film adaptation of the musical, which remains his only screen credit. His additional Broadway appearances included Woman of the Year, The Young Abe Lincoln, Carousel, and the play Oliver Oliver.
Beyond Broadway, Hill maintained an extensive career in regional theatre, Off-Broadway productions, and touring companies. He performed with Frances Langford, Martyn Green's Gilbert and Sullivan company, the National Repertory Theatre, Ford's Theater, and the Virginia City Players of Montana, and appeared in dinner theaters across the country. He also took on multiple roles at the North Shore Music Theatre. In 1990, he joined a national tour of The Fantasticks that ran for a year and a half, playing Hucklebee alongside Robert Goulet as El Gallo and James Valentine as Henry.
Hill died in New Jersey on October 19, 1996, at the age of 69, while in rehearsals for Gigi at the Paper Mill Playhouse. He is buried in Westwood Cemetery in Oberlin, Ohio.
