About
Ralph Morgan, born Raphael Kuhner Wuppermann on July 6, 1883, in New York, New York, was a stage and film character actor, union activist, and Broadway performer whose career spanned more than four decades. He was the brother of actor Frank Morgan and the father of actress Claudia Morgan.
Morgan's early education took him through Trinity School and Riverview Military Academy before he enrolled at Columbia University, where he earned a law degree. He had already demonstrated an interest in performance during his time at Columbia, appearing in the university's annual Varsity Show; in 1905, billed as Raphael Kuhner Wuppermann, he took part in The Khan of Kathan, that year's production. After nearly two years practicing law, he left the legal profession to pursue acting full time.
His first professional stage role came in The Bachelor in 1909, the same year he began what would become a Broadway career lasting until 1952. In 1913, he joined the summer stock company at Denver's Elitch Theatre, and by 1918 he was playing John Marvin in the hit play Lightnin'. His Broadway credits over the years included Strange Interlude, The Moon Is Down, This, Too, Shall Pass, Three Wishes for Jamie, and Fledgling, among other productions.
Morgan made his silent film debut in 1915 in productions filmed on the East Coast. As the industry transitioned to sound, he took on leading roles in Strange Interlude and Rasputin and the Empress, both released in 1932. He continued working across multiple media, appearing in the 1942 serial Gang Busters as a brilliant surgeon turned master criminal, and later in radio and television productions, frequently in religious dramas made for Family Theater.
A former Equity member, Morgan became a founding member of the Screen Actors Guild and served as its president on two separate occasions. The Guild subsequently honored his legacy by naming an annual award after him, presented by the L.A. Local Honors and Tributes Committee, with an inscription recognizing his devotion to the cause of actors, his courage, and his personal sacrifice on their behalf. Morgan also received a star in the Motion Pictures section of the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1617 Vine Street, dedicated on February 8, 1960. He died on June 11, 1956, at the age of 72, of a lung ailment.
