About
Ralph Ernest Dumke (July 25, 1899 – January 4, 1964) was an American comedian, actor, and Broadway performer born in South Bend, Indiana. He attended the University of Notre Dame, where he played varsity football, before launching a career that spanned vaudeville, radio, Broadway, film, and television across four decades.
Dumke began his professional life in Chicago in the early 1920s, forming a comedy duo with Ed East under the name "The Mirthquakers." The pair toured nationally on the B. F. Keith Circuit for ten years, becoming established stars in vaudeville. A notable milestone in their run came on December 27, 1932, when they performed as one of the leading acts at the opening of Radio City Music Hall. Alongside their stage work, Dumke and East were early participants in radio broadcasting in New York City and Chicago during the late 1920s and early 1930s. From 1930 to 1937, they hosted the daily fifteen-minute NBC Radio program "Sisters of the Skillet," a comedy and music show featuring sketches, jokes, and humorous musical numbers. Dumke later returned to NBC radio as Captain Walt, hosting Hook 'n' Ladder Follies from 1943 to 1944.
Dumke made his Broadway debut in 1942, playing Hercules in the original production of By Jupiter, with music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Lorenz Hart. He went on to appear on Broadway consistently through the mid-1940s, taking on a range of roles in musical productions. He played General Bardini in The Merry Widow, Calchas in Helen Goes to Troy, the Duke of Maddeloni in The Maid as Mistress, Joe Horn in Sadie Thompson, Dapper Dan Pepper in Mr. Strauss Goes to Boston, and Cap'n Andy in Show Boat. He also performed with the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera in productions including The Chocolate Soldier and Rosalinda.
From 1949 onward, Dumke built a substantial career as a character actor in American film, appearing in more than forty feature pictures through 1961 across genres including crime, film noir, drama, science fiction, and comedy. His film credits include All the King's Men (1949), The Breaking Point (1950), The War of the Worlds (1953), Daddy Long Legs (1955), and Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956). On television, he starred as Captain Billy Bryant in the CBS variety program Captain Billy's Showboat in 1948 and co-hosted ABC's Movieland Quiz that same year. He made guest appearances on numerous television programs during the 1950s and 1960s, among them I Love Lucy, Perry Mason, The Bob Cummings Show, December Bride, My Little Margie, Waterfront, and The Andy Griffith Show.
Dumke married Greta Leona Edner in 1925, and the couple had two children. He died on January 4, 1964, at his home, of a sudden heart seizure, at the age of 64.
