About
Rachelle Ann Villalobos Go was born on August 31, 1986, in Pasig, Metro Manila, Philippines, the eldest of four children of Oscar Go and Russell Villalobos. Her mother had performed as a member of an all-girl touring band in Japan, and her father cultivated a musical household, encouraging his children to learn instruments and perform publicly. Go's singing was reportedly noticed when she hummed a tune at six months old, and by age three she was performing songs independently. She began taking voice lessons at nine and entered amateur singing competitions throughout her childhood, including a runner-up finish at age eleven on Eat Bulaga!'s Birit Baby, where she sang Celine Dion's "All by Myself."
In 2003, Go enrolled at San Beda University to study business management, but that same year she auditioned for the television talent show Search for a Star, advancing to the ten-person grand final. She left San Beda during her freshman year to concentrate on her music career, and on March 13, 2004, she won the competition at the PhilSports Arena with a cover of Mariah Carey's "Through the Rain." Philippine Star critic Matthew Estabillo praised her vocals and stage presence, noting that her victory was not built on the personal narratives common to reality competitions.
Following her win, Go signed with Viva Records and released her self-titled debut studio album on July 27, 2004. Produced in collaboration with Eugene Villaluz and songwriters including Jimmy Antiporda, Jay Durias, and Vehnee Saturno, the album featured the cover single "Don't Cry Out Loud" and received double platinum certification from the Philippine Association of the Record Industry. Additional singles included a duet with Christian Bautista titled "You and Me (We Wanted It All)" and "From The Start," which she performed at the 2004 Shanghai Music Festival, where it earned her the Silver Prize and Best Song. The album brought her the MTV Pilipinas Music Award for Favorite Female Video for "Love of My Life" and the Box Office Entertainment Award for Most Promising Female Singer. That July, she co-headlined Night of the Champions at the Araneta Coliseum alongside Sarah Geronimo and Erik Santos, a production that won Best Major Concert Collaboration at the 2005 Aliw Awards.
Go released four more studio albums under Viva Records: I Care in February 2006, Obsession on January 23, 2007, Falling in Love in 2009, and Unbreakable in 2011. I Care was produced with international collaborators including Christian De Walden, Todd Cerney, Skip Adams, Carlo Nasi, and Luca Vittori, blending Original Pilipino Music with other styles. Its lead single "If You Walk Away" earned Go an Awit Award nomination for Best Performance by a Female Recording Artist, and she won the Myx Music Award for Favorite Female Artist at the 2006 ceremonies. Obsession, recorded across studios in Manila, Los Angeles, and Milan, was supported by the singles "Don't Say Goodbye" and "Alam Ng Ating Mga Puso," the latter winning Favorite Mellow Video at the 2008 Myx Music Awards. She also recorded the duet "Pag-ibig na Kaya" with Christian Bautista, which was named Favorite Collaboration at the same ceremony. In April 2008, she staged a concert at the 19 East Bar in Parañaque that was captured on the live album Rachelle Ann Rocks Live!, featuring rock covers including Harem Scarem's "Honestly" and Aerosmith's "Cryin'." Alongside her recording career, she appeared in the television series Diva in 2010, Nita Negrita in 2011, Biritera in 2012, and Indio in 2013.
Go's theater career began in 2011 when she played the lead role of Ariel in a local Philippine production of The Little Mermaid. In 2013, she starred as Jane Porter in the Meralco Theater's staging of Tarzan. Her international breakthrough came in 2014, when she was cast as Gigi Van Tranh in the West End revival of Miss Saigon. She subsequently portrayed Eliza Schuyler in the original 2017 West End production of Hamilton. Go has also played Fantine in multiple stagings and tours of Les Misérables, including the show's 30th anniversary production at the Sondheim Theatre.
Go made her Broadway debut in 2017, reprising her role as Gigi Van Tranh in Miss Saigon. Her accolades across her career include an Aliw Award, an MTV Pilipinas Music Award, two Awit Awards, and five Myx Music Awards. In 2021, Tatler magazine named her one of the most influential people in Asia. Her younger brother, Oz Go, is a fashion designer with an eponymous bridal wear brand.
