About
Powell Lindsay (1905–1987) was an American actor, director, and writer born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His work spanned stage, film, and theatrical production, and he has been described as the "muse of black social realism on film." He maintained a close friendship with poet and playwright Langston Hughes and produced works that brought Hughes's writing to wider audiences.
As a stage actor, Lindsay appeared in the 1950 Broadway revival of Tobacco Road. His directorial work included a 1940 production of Theodore Ward's Big White Fog, a 1954 staging of Flight from Fear at Detroit's Masonic Temple, and a 1956 production of This is Our America.
Lindsay's film career included appearances in four pictures released in the late 1940s: That Man of Mine (1946), Jivin' in Be-Bop (1946), Love in Syncopation (1946), and Souls of Sin (1949).
He was married to June Lindsey (1920–2013). Lindsay died of cancer at his home in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on September 22, 1987.
