About
Phyllis Hill (October 27, 1920 – January 1, 1993) was an American actress and dancer born in New York City. Her mother was actress Peggy Johnson Hill, and her sister, Joyce Hill Rainier, performed with the Monte Carlo Ballets Russes. Hill made her theatrical debut as one of George Balanchine's Baby Ballerinas in New York and went on to perform with both the Metropolitan Opera Company ballet and Radio City Music Hall's Ballet Corps.
Hill's Broadway career spanned from 1942 to 1953 and encompassed a range of productions. Her stage credits include Sons and Soldiers (1942), What's Up? (1943), Helen Goes to Troy (1943), Rosalinda, Cyrano de Bergerac, Volpone (1947), The Alchemist (1947), Angel Street (1947), The Insect Comedy, The Shrike, and The Fifth Season. Her work crossed genres from drama to comedy to musical productions throughout that period.
Beyond the stage, Hill built a substantial television career. She portrayed Poco Thurman in the NBC drama Three Steps to Heaven, Mrs. Allison in the NBC serial Morning Star, and Agnes Adams in the ABC comedy That Girl. She appeared in three episodes of Dr. Kildare during the 1964–1965 season and made four appearances on The F.B.I. between 1966 and 1970. Her Perry Mason credits included the title role of Katherine Stewart in "The Case of the Wednesday Woman" and the role of Rachel Gordon in "The Case of the Sleepy Slayer," both in 1964, along with a third appearance during the final years of that series.
Hill was married twice, both times to actors, and neither marriage produced children. Her first husband was José Ferrer; they were married from June 19, 1948, until their divorce on July 7, 1953. Her second marriage was to Frank Overton in 1962, which ended with his death on April 24, 1967. Hill died of lung cancer in Los Angeles on January 1, 1993, at the age of 72, survived by a niece.
