About
Phoebe Mercedes Fox, born on 16 April 1987 in West London, England, is an English actress whose work spans theatre, film, and television. The daughter of actors Stuart Fox and Prue Clarke, Fox has no familial connection to the Fox acting dynasty despite sharing the surname. She attended Chiswick School before training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where she also met her future husband, actor Kyle Soller. The two are married and reside in London.
Fox launched her professional stage career in 2010 with a debut appearance in A Month in the Country at the Chichester Festival Theatre. The following year brought a concentrated burst of theatrical activity: she appeared in As You Like It at the Rose Theatre, The Acid Test at the Royal Court Theatre, and There Is a War at the National Theatre as part of the Double Feature in the Paintframe. Those performances earned her a nomination for the 2011 Evening Standard Theatre Award for the Milton Shulman Award for Outstanding Newcomer, and that same year Screen International named her among its Stars of Tomorrow.
Her stage work continued to attract significant recognition when she performed in A View from the Bridge at the Young Vic in 2014, a production that also featured Mark Strong, who won the Olivier Award for Best Actor. Fox received a nomination for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for that performance. The production subsequently transferred to Broadway in 2015, marking her Broadway debut.
On screen, Fox appeared in the Black Mirror episode "The Entire History of You" in 2011 and played the role of Eve Perkins in The Woman in Black: Angel of Death, released in 2015. Her television credits include Switch in 2012, in which she played Grace, and The Musketeers in 2014, where she portrayed the Duchess of Savoy. Also in 2014, she played Liz Reitell in A Poet in New York. In 2015 she starred as Vanessa Bell in Life in Squares, a BBC drama centered on the Bloomsbury Group, and appeared in the thriller film Eye in the Sky. She portrayed key figures in two prestige productions for the BBC: The Hollow Crown: Wars of the Roses in 2016. From 2020 to 2023, Fox played Marial, a principal character in the Hulu series The Great alongside Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult. The ensemble cast received a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Outstanding Cast in a Comedy Series.
