About
Phoebe Foster, born Angeline Egar on July 9, 1896, in Center Harbor, New Hampshire, was an American actress who worked in both theater and film. The daughter of Arthur and Emily Egar, she trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts before launching a stage career that spanned from 1914 to 1938.
Foster's Broadway debut came in 1914 with Roi Cooper Megrue's Under Cover, and she continued to accumulate stage credits throughout the following decades. Her subsequent Broadway appearances included The Cinderella Man in 1916, Three's a Crowd in 1919, Captain Applejack in 1921, The Jazz Singer in 1925, and Topaze in 1930. Later productions included The Truth Game, Cynara, Bachelor Born, Living Dangerously, and American Landscape, the last of which, in 1938, marked the end of her Broadway career. In 1936, she also made her first stage appearance in London, starring in a production of Night of January 16th.
Her film career began with a pair of short films before she made her feature debut in 1931 in George Cukor's Tarnished Lady, in which she appeared alongside Tallulah Bankhead. That same year she was cast in Edmund Goulding's The Night Angel, which starred Nancy Carroll and Fredric March. Foster worked with Cukor again in 1933, appearing in both Our Betters and Dinner at Eight. In 1935 she was cast as Dolly in the Tolstoy adaptation Anna Karenina, starring Greta Garbo. Her final film credit was The Gorgeous Hussy in 1936.
On September 12, 1927, Foster married Harold LeRoy Whitney, a millionaire and heir to an ironworks fortune, whose divorce from his previous wife had been finalized only days earlier. The couple kept the marriage private for several days before it became public. They filed for divorce in 1943. Foster died in June 1975 in Boston, Massachusetts.
