About
Phillip Reed, born Milton LeRoy Treinis on March 25, 1908, was an American actor whose career spanned stage, film, radio, and television. He died on December 7, 1996, and was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California.
Reed grew up in Brooklyn, where he was a star athlete at Erasmus Hall High School. He attended college for one year before pursuing acting. His stage name was adopted after he moved to Hollywood, though early in his career he performed under the billing Milton Leroy.
His Broadway work began under that earlier name, with appearances in Melody and Ballyhoo of 1932. He returned to Broadway under the name Phillip Reed, appearing in productions including Reflected Glory and My Dear Children, and the musical Destry Rides Again. His Broadway career extended from 1936 to 1960.
On radio, Reed portrayed Russ Barrington in the CBS soap opera Society Girl and Brian Wells in the CBS soap opera David Harum. He also starred in a series of four films released between 1947 and 1948 based on the Big Town radio series, in which he played the recurring character Steve Wilson.
Reed's television work included a lead role in the 1955 anthology drama series Police Call. He appeared in multiple episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents, including "The Derelicts," "A Bullet for Baldwin," "Sylvia," and "The Big Score," where he was often credited as Philip Reed. In 1965, he appeared as King Toranshah in the Elvis Presley musical film Harum Scarum.
