About
Born July 23, 1967, in Fairport, New York, Philip Seymour Hoffman was the son of Marilyn Loucks and Gordon Hoffman. He discovered acting in high school before training at Circle in the Square Theater School and New York University Tisch School of the Arts. Over a career spanning less than 25 years, he appeared in more than 50 films. He also served for a time as artistic director of the Labyrinth Theater Company. His longtime partner, costume designer and Labyrinth Theater Company artistic director Mimi O'Donnell, was the mother of his three children: Cooper, Tallulah, and Willa.
Among his extensive film credits: "Capote," "The Big Lebowski," "Boogie Nights," "Moneyball," "Almost Famous," "The Hunger Games," "The Master," "Red Dragon," "Magnolia," "Scent of a Woman," "Twister," "Charlie Wilson's War," "The Ides of March," "Cold Mountain," "Doubt," "Pirate Radio," "A Most Wanted Man," and "Punch-Drunk Love." Television appearances included "Louie," "Happyish," "Inside the Actors Studio," "The Daily Show," "Arthur," "Entertainment Tonight," "The Oprah Winfrey Show," and "Charlie Rose."
His performance in "Capote" earned him the 2006 Oscar for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role. On February 5, 2014, Broadway theater marquees were dimmed in his honor.
