About
Philip John Guard was an English stage actor born in Rochford, Essex, on 29 November 1928. Though he made occasional appearances in film and television, his career was centered primarily on stage work.
Guard appeared on Broadway in 1954 in A Midsummer Night's Dream, representing one of his notable stage credits during a career that kept him largely in the theater.
In 1956, Guard married the actress Charlotte Mitchell. The marriage ended in separation in 1968. The couple had three children: sons Christopher Guard and Dominic Guard, both of whom became actors, and a daughter, Candy Guard, who pursued a career as a writer and animator.
Among the more unusual footnotes of Guard's career is his inadvertent connection to a landmark recording in popular music. A 1967 BBC radio broadcast of King Lear, in which Guard played the role of Edgar alongside Mark Dignam and John Bryning, was incorporated into the fade-out of The Beatles' song "I Am the Walrus," making Guard an unwitting presence on the track.
Guard died in May 2024 at the age of 95.
