Philip Casnoff is an American actor and director born on August 3, 1949, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He graduated in the 226th Class from Central High School in Philadelphia in 1967 and later attended Wesleyan University, where he developed his interest in acting. He went on to build a career spanning both stage and screen.
Casnoff's Broadway career ran from 1972 to 1996 and included productions such as Godspell, Grease, Shogun, The Musical, and Chess. His work in Chess earned him a Theatre World Award in 1988. The role stands among his most recognized stage credits.
Beyond the stage, Casnoff became widely known to television audiences for his portrayal of Elkanah Bent, the antagonist of the miniseries North and South. The character, described as sadistic and egomaniacal, brought Casnoff significant visibility as a screen performer.
In his personal life, Casnoff is married to actress Roxanne Hart. The couple has two sons.
