About

Philip Abbott (March 20, 1924 – February 23, 1998) was an American actor born in Lincoln, Nebraska, whose career spanned Broadway, film, and television across five decades. He attended Fordham University in New York City and later trained at the Pasadena Playhouse. During World War II, Abbott served in the United States Army.

His stage career brought him to Broadway between 1948 and 1957, with credits including Springtime Folly, Harvest of Years, and The Square Root of Wonderful. Alongside his theatrical work, Abbott established himself as a character actor in film during the 1950s and 1960s, appearing in productions such as Miracle of the White Stallions (1963).

Television became the primary arena for Abbott's professional life. From 1952 to 1995, he accumulated more than one hundred guest appearances across a wide range of series. Among these were NBC's Justice, centered on the Legal Aid Society of New York, and The Eleventh Hour, a medical drama focused on psychiatry. He appeared on the CBS anthology series Appointment with Adventure and The Lloyd Bridges Show, as well as the ABC western Stoney Burke, starring Jack Lord, and the NBC sitcom Kentucky Jones with Dennis Weaver, in the episode "The Music Kids Make." On Perry Mason, Abbott made two separate appearances: in 1961 as journalist Edmond Aitken in "The Case of the Envious Editor," and in 1965 as Harry Grant in "The Case of the Wrongful Writ." In 1986, he took on the role of Grant Stevens in the daytime soap opera The Young and the Restless.

Abbott is most closely associated with the ABC crime series The F.B.I., in which he played Assistant Director Arthur Ward opposite Efrem Zimbalist Jr., who starred as Inspector Lewis Erskine. Abbott died of cancer on February 23, 1998, in Tarzana, California, at the age of 73, and is interred at San Fernando Mission Cemetery in Los Angeles.
