About
Phil Leeds (April 6, 1916 – August 16, 1998) was an American character actor and comedian born in New York City into a Jewish family. Raised in the Bronx, his father worked as a post office clerk, and Leeds spent time as a peanut vendor near Yankee Stadium and the Polo Grounds in Manhattan. Following his service in the United States Army during World War II, he launched an entertainment career that would span stage, film, and television across several decades.
Leeds began as a standup comedian before transitioning into acting. His Broadway career ran from 1942 to 1973 and included productions such as Hurry, Harry, Two Gentlemen of Verona, Inquest, Little Murders, and Dinner at Eight. His film work included roles in Rosemary's Baby (1968), in which he played Dr. Shand, Ghost, and Beaches. At age 80, he appeared in the 1996 Halloween episode of Roseanne titled "Satan, Darling," a parody of Rosemary's Baby that directly referenced his role in the original film. His final screen appearance was a brief scene in Lost & Found (1999).
Television audiences encountered Leeds across an exceptionally wide range of series. His guest credits included The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Monkees, The Patty Duke Show, Car 54 Where Are You?, All in the Family, Barney Miller, The Odd Couple, Happy Days, Three's Company, Night Court, ALF, The Golden Girls, Mad About You, Wings, Roseanne, Friends, Everybody Loves Raymond, The Larry Sanders Show, Ally McBeal, Boy Meets World, and Double Rush, among others. After his death on August 16, 1998, the Ally McBeal episode "Happy Trails" incorporated footage of his prior appearances on the show as a tribute to his character.
During the McCarthy era, Leeds was blacklisted after invoking the Fifth Amendment when called before the House Un-American Activities Committee. He was married to fellow character actress Toby Brandt for 53 years, from 1934 until her death in 1987. Leeds died of pneumonia at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles at the age of 82.
