About
Phil Arnold, born Philip Aronoff Arnold on September 15, 1909, in Hackensack, New Jersey, was an American actor and dancer who worked across stage, screen, television, and vaudeville. He died of a heart attack on May 9, 1968, at the age of 58.
Arnold's stage career included Broadway appearances between 1932 and 1936, with credits in Summer Wives and Manhattan Varieties. His work in vaudeville ran alongside these theatrical engagements, reflecting a performance background that spanned multiple live entertainment formats before he transitioned more fully into film and television.
Over the course of his screen career, Arnold appeared in approximately 150 film and television productions between 1939 and 1968. He became recognizable to later audiences through his appearances in several Three Stooges short films, including Pardon My Backfire, Sing a Song of Six Pants, Tricky Dicks, and The Three Stooges Go Around the World in a Daze. Among his most noted contributions was voice work rather than on-screen performance: he provided the voice of Peeping Tom in The Ghost Talks and reprised a similar role as Sir Tom in that film's remake, Creeps.
His feature film appearances included Robin and the 7 Hoods, Blackbeard's Ghost, The Adventures of Bullwhip Griffin, Good Times, Zebra in the Kitchen, Yes Sir, Mr. Bones, and Hold On. His filmography also included earlier titles such as Buzzy Rides the Range, Buzzy and the Phantom Pinto, Killer at Large, Deadline, The Big Chase, The Court-Martial of Billy Mitchell, and The Incredible Mr. Limpet, in which he appeared as a short fisherman in an uncredited role.
Arnold's television work encompassed a range of well-known series, including I Love Lucy, The Twilight Zone, Adventures of Superman, Maverick, Cowboy G-Men, and Bewitched, as well as guest appearances on Official Detective and Colgate Theatre.
