Peter McRobbie is a Scottish-American actor born on January 31, 1943, in Hawick, Scotland, the son of Mary Fleming McRobbie, a writer, and William McRobbie, a storekeeper. He emigrated to the United States with his family at a young age, settling in Milford, Connecticut. McRobbie earned a degree from the Yale Drama School in 1966, subsequently spent a year in graduate study at the University of Tulsa, and trained in acting with Uta Hagen and James Saito at HB Studio in New York City. Between 1966 and 1968, he served in the United States Army at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, attaining the rank of Specialist 5.

McRobbie's stage career brought him to Broadway across a span of more than two decades, from 1979 to 2001. His Broadway credits include The Mystery of Edwin Drood, The Master Builder, Saint Joan, The Crucible, and Night Must Fall. In 1977, he married actress Charlotte Bova, and the couple have two children.

His screen career encompasses more than 60 film and television appearances. Among his film credits are Spider-Man 2, Brokeback Mountain, 16 Blocks, World Trade Center, Find Me Guilty, Big, Shaft, Sleepers, Bullets over Broadway, Inherent Vice, Lincoln, The Visit, and Bridge of Spies. In Brokeback Mountain (2005), McRobbie portrayed John C. Twist, a role that brought him considerable attention. He played George H. Pendleton in Steven Spielberg's Lincoln (2012), depicting the congressman as a fierce opponent of the constitutional amendment abolishing slavery. In M. Night Shyamalan's The Visit (2015), he appeared as Pop Pop Jamison.

On television, McRobbie held a recurring role as Judge Walter Bradley across both Law & Order and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. He appeared as Father Felix in two episodes of The Sopranos, first in the second season in 2000 and again in the third season in 2001. From 2010 to 2013, he portrayed FBI Supervisor Frederick Elliot in nine episodes of Boardwalk Empire. McRobbie played Father Paul Lantom in the Marvel series Daredevil and The Defenders from 2015 to 2018, and held a recurring role in the TNT series The Alienist.
