About

Peter Murray Kapetan (October 21, 1956 – June 4, 2008) was an American actor, singer, and dancer whose Broadway career spanned from 1979 to 2006. A native of Fairfield, Connecticut, he trained at Northwestern University, graduating in 1978, and went on to build a substantial body of work across Broadway, national tours, and off-Broadway productions.

Kapetan's early theatrical formation took shape at Phillips Academy in Andover, where he was part of the school's first co-educational class. In 1974, he took on the lead role of French planter Emile in the school's production of South Pacific, performing opposite classmate Dana Delany. He later studied at Northwestern University, completing his degree in 1978.

His Broadway credits encompassed a range of musicals and comedies. He was part of the original cast of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, playing one of the brothers, and also appeared in Got Tu Go Disco. His other Broadway appearances included The Scarlet Pimpernel, the comedy The Silver Wedding, and Titanic. He played Oliver Webb in On the Twentieth Century and held leading roles in both The Wedding Singer, in which he portrayed a Ronald Reagan impersonator, and Aida. He also appeared in Sunset Boulevard and took on the role of Sam Himmelsteen in The Wild Party.

Beyond Broadway, Kapetan performed in numerous national tours and off-Broadway productions, including a leading role in an off-Broadway staging of Camelot featuring Richard Burton. His work extended to film as well, with appearances in the 2008 movie Farm Girl in New York and the Disney production Confessions of a Shopaholic.

Kapetan died of cancer on June 4, 2008.
