About

Peter Jöback is a Swedish singer, actor, and musical artist born on 4 June 1971 in Stockholm. He spent his childhood in Värmland and Östergötland and received his musical education at the Adolf Fredrik's Music School in Stockholm. He is the son of singer Monica Lind. On 25 June 2010, Jöback married Oskar Nilsson at the Cirkus Theatre in Stockholm.

Jöback's professional breakthrough came through his work with ABBA collaborators Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson on the musical Kristina från Duvemåla at Malmö Opera and Music Theatre, where he originated the role of Robert from 1995 to 1998. The production was seen by over one million Swedes, and the original cast recording was released as a triple-platinum CD box set that received several Swedish Grammy awards. The role's theme song, "Guldet blev till sand," broke records on the Swedish pop charts, and Jöback earned his first Golden Mask for the performance.

His West End career began in 1997 when producer Cameron Mackintosh cast him in the lead role of Chris in Miss Saigon at the Theatre Royal. In 2000, at the same venue, Jöback originated the role of Michael in Mackintosh's production of The Witches of Eastwick. That same year he released his first English-language studio album, Only When I Breathe, which reached number one on the Swedish album charts. His 1997 album Personliga Val, featuring pop-oriented interpretations of musical theatre songs, had previously reached number two on the same chart.

In 2004, Jöback collaborated with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Nick Davies, on a project called Storybook, performing classic songs in new arrangements. The resulting CD became a Gold Disc, and the project included concerts at the Globe Arena and Scandinavium Arena in Sweden. His 2009 album East Side Stories was recorded in Woodstock and featured guests including Kate Pierson of The B-52's, Sia, and Gail Ann Dorsey. In 2010, Jöback entered Melodifestivalen, the Swedish pre-selection for the Eurovision Song Contest, with the song "Hollow," which reached the final and finished ninth after he received a wildcard from SVT.

From 2003 to 2007, Jöback performed the role of the Emcee in productions of Cabaret, first at the Gladsaxe Theatre in Copenhagen in 2003, then in Stockholm from 2006 to 2007, and in Gothenburg in 2007. The Stockholm and Gothenburg run earned him his second Golden Mask. From December 2013 to April 2014, he played the title role in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street at Stockholms Stadsteater.

Jöback is particularly associated with the role of the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera. He appeared in the finale of the production's 25th anniversary concert at the Royal Albert Hall in 2011, then took over the role in the West End production in 2012 from Earl Carpenter. He brought the role to Broadway in April 2013, succeeding Hugh Panaro, and remained in the production until 24 August 2013, when Panaro resumed the part. In January 2018, Jöback returned to Broadway for the production's 30th anniversary, taking over from Laird Mackintosh and performing alongside Ali Ewoldt until 31 March 2018. He also led a Stockholm production of the show that premiered in September 2016. His Broadway appearances place him in the show's history beginning with the production's run, which the database records note started in 1988.

In January 2024, it was announced that Jöback would join the West End production of Les Misérables at the Sondheim Theatre as Jean Valjean for a run from 13 February to 9 March 2024. He reprised the role in Sweden as part of Les Misérables: The Arena Spectacular World Tour, with performances in Gothenburg, Malmö, and Stockholm in January and February 2025. Jöback also placed second in the final of the fifth season of Masked Singer Sverige, broadcast on TV4.
