About
Peter Hermann is an American actor born on August 15, 1967, in New York City to German parents. When he was two months old, his family relocated to Germany, where he lived until age ten. Upon returning to the United States, he learned English and became bilingual. He grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut, and later attended Yale University. Following graduation, he taught high school English through Teach For America and worked as a fact-checker for Vanity Fair before pursuing an acting career.
Hermann's television work spans several decades and genres. He made early appearances on the soap opera Guiding Light from 1997 to 1998, and beginning in 2002 took on the recurring role of defense attorney Trevor Langan on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, a part he has continued to play for many years. He appeared briefly on Beautiful People and Angela's Eyes in 2006, guested on 30 Rock during its first season, and starred as Davis Draper in the ABC mid-season replacement series Cashmere Mafia. In 2011, he began appearing as Erin Reagan's ex-husband Jack Boyle on Blue Bloods. From 2015 to 2021, he starred as Charles Brooks in the Younger series. He also appeared as a guest actor in season two of And Just Like That.
On film, Hermann portrayed Jeremy Glick in the 2006 feature United 93. He has additionally appeared in commercials, including anti-tobacco "Fair Enough" advertisements, and has served as the face of Persil ProClean detergent since the late 2010s.
Hermann's Broadway career ran from 2001 to 2011. He participated in The 24 Hour Plays in 2004 and appeared in Judgment at Nuremberg. In 2007, he was part of the Broadway premiere of Eric Bogosian's Talk Radio, which starred Liev Schreiber and also featured Law & Order: Special Victims Unit cast member Stephanie March. The production began performances on February 15, 2007, opened officially on March 11, and gave its final Broadway performance on June 24, 2007. In 2011, he appeared in the Broadway play War Horse.
Beyond acting, Hermann authored the children's book If the S in Moose Comes Loose, published by HarperCollins in March 2018. In his personal life, he met actress Mariska Hargitay while both were working on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and the two married on August 28, 2004, in Santa Barbara, California. Together they have a son, and in April 2011 they adopted a baby girl, followed six months later by the adoption of a baby boy.
