About
Peter Goo Chong, born John Kohnie Kuh on December 2, 1898, in Honolulu, Hawaii, was a Chinese-American performer whose career spanned Broadway, vaudeville, and Hollywood film. He is also credited in various sources as Goo Chong or Peter Chong Goe. He died on January 13, 1985. His family origins were in Miu, China.
Chong pursued an advanced education, attending Oberlin College and ultimately earning both a master's degree and a PhD. Before establishing himself in film, he built a stage career that included a vaudeville act and a series of Broadway appearances spanning from 1928 to 1942. His Broadway credits included the musical Luana, the plays They Knew What They Wanted and Hotel Alimony, Jamboree, and Run Sheep Run, among other productions.
When Chong transitioned to Hollywood, he signed with Warner Brothers. Alongside his film work, he served part-time as an interpreter for the Los Angeles Police Department. Throughout much of his screen career, he was cast in Japanese, Indonesian, and Hawaiian roles rather than Chinese ones; he did not appear in a Chinese role until 1953.
In his personal life, Chong was married twice. His first wife, Ah He "Soo" Young, was his partner in a vaudeville act. His second wife, Eileen Loh, was a schoolteacher, and together they had a daughter named Molly.
