Peter Francis James, born September 16, 1956, in Chicago, Illinois, is an American actor and voice-over artist known for his strong baritone. The son of David James and Mary Galloway James, he grew up with five siblings before building a career that has spanned stage, screen, and audio work from 1979 through 2024.
James began his acting career in 1979 with a production of Shakespeare's Coriolanus featuring Earle Hyman and Morgan Freeman. His early stage work earned him two Obie Awards: the first for his portrayal of Claire in Jean Genet's The Maids, and the second for his portrayal of Colin Powell in Stuff Happens, a production that also brought him a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance in 2006 and a Lortel Award. He appeared as Oscar opposite Dame Maggie Smith in Edward Albee's The Lady from Dubuque at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, later reprising the role in New York opposite Jane Alexander. His Broadway career, which extended from 1980 to 2024, included a featured role in Regina Taylor's Drowning Crow at the Manhattan Theatre Club, as well as appearances in Hillary and Clinton and Left on Tenth. From 2022 to 2023, he starred as Florenz Ziegfeld in the Broadway revival of Funny Girl. James has served as a guest instructor at HB Studio and taught Shakespeare at the Yale School of Drama from 2000 to 2020.
On television, James portrayed Raymond Parks, husband of Rosa Parks, in the 2002 television film The Rosa Parks Story. He held a recurring role as Judge Kevin Beck on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and played Jahfree Neema in the HBO series Oz. His additional television credits include Gossip Girl, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Law & Order, and Third Watch. From 2003 into early 2004, he played Clayton Boudreau on the daytime drama Guiding Light, returning for a single episode in 2006 and again on a recurring basis in 2009. His film work includes Long Day's Journey into Night in 1982, a 1990 television film of Hamlet directed by Kevin Kline, the role of Thurgood Marshall in the American Experience episode Simple Justice in 1993, Isaac Coles in the 1998 miniseries The Wedding, and appearances in Montana and Joe Gould's Secret. In voice work, James provided the voice of Dr. J.S. Steinman in Ken Levine's video game BioShock and served as the reader for the Recorded Books edition of Richard Wright's Native Son. James was married to Jillian Nelson from 1995 to 2003.
