About

Peter Dougan Capaldi is a Scottish actor, director, singer, and guitarist born on 14 April 1958 in Glasgow, Scotland, to Gerald and Nancy Capaldi. His paternal grandfather was Italian, while the remainder of his ancestry is Scottish and Irish. His parents operated an ice cream business in the Springburn neighborhood of Glasgow, where they were neighbors of the family of Armando Iannucci, the future creator of The Thick of It, though Capaldi and Iannucci did not know each other as children. Capaldi attended St Teresa's Primary School in Possilpark, St Matthew's Primary School in Bishopbriggs, and St Ninian's High School in Kirkintilloch before enrolling at the Glasgow School of Art. During his high school years he was a member of the Antonine Players theatre group, which performed at the Fort Theatre in Bishopbriggs. As an art student, he served as lead singer and guitarist in a punk rock band called the Dreamboys, whose drummer was future comedian Craig Ferguson; the two also performed a cabaret act together as Bing & Dean Hitler and co-wrote an alternative pantomime of Sleeping Beauty.

Capaldi's acting career began with a 1974 performance of An Inspector Calls, and his first onscreen appearance came in 1981 when he played Joe Edwards in Charles Gormley's film Living Apart Together. From 1983 onward he took on a broader range of roles across film, television, and theatre. That year he appeared as John Lennon in a production of John, Paul, George, Ringo ... and Bert at the Young Vic and played Danny Oldsen in the film Local Hero. His theatre work in the early 1980s also included the role of Fabian in Twelfth Night in 1983 and Jonathan Harker in Dracula in 1984. In 1988 he appeared in two notable films: as archaeology student Angus Flint in The Lair of the White Worm and as the valet Azolan in Dangerous Liaisons. Television film roles during this period included George Harrison in John and Yoko: A Love Story in 1985 and Robert McRae in Chain in 1990.

The early 1990s marked a turning point in Capaldi's career. In 1992 he wrote and starred in the film comedy Soft Top Hard Shoulder, which won the audience award at the London Film Festival, and took his first starring television role as Luke Wakefield in the BBC drama series Mr Wakefield's Crusade. That same year he played spy chief Mr. Vladimir in the miniseries The Secret Agent. He also directed the short film Franz Kafka's It's a Wonderful Life, starring Richard E. Grant, which earned him both the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film and the BAFTA Award for Best Short Film in 1993. Also in 1993, he played investigator Luke Fitzwilliam in a stage adaptation of Agatha Christie's Murder Is Easy at the Duke of York's Theatre. Subsequent television credits through the mid-to-late 1990s included the uncle Rory in The Crow Road and the angel Islington in the BBC Two serial Neverwhere, both in 1996, as well as a guest appearance as a TV producer in two episodes of The Vicar of Dibley in 1994.

Capaldi's Broadway credit stems from his role as journalist and art critic Robbie Ross in The Judas Kiss, which premiered at the Almeida Theatre in 1998 before transferring to the West End and subsequently to Broadway in New York City. Around the same period he appeared in the comedy film Bean in 1997 as the character Gareth. He went on to write and direct the drama film Strictly Sinatra, starring Ian Hart and Kelly Macdonald, released in 2001, and directed two series of the sitcom Getting On between 2009 and 2010. He also played Dr. Ronnie Pilfrey in the comedy-drama Fortysomething in 2003 and Jean Cocteau in the biographical film Modigliani in 2004.

Capaldi rose to widespread prominence through his portrayal of spin doctor Malcolm Tucker in the Armando Iannucci-written BBC sitcom The Thick of It, a role he held from 2005 to 2012. He reprised the character in the 2009 film spin-off In the Loop. The performance earned him four British Academy Television Award nominations and the 2010 BAFTA TV Award for Male Performance in a Comedy Role, as well as the British Comedy Award for Best TV Comedy Actor in both 2010 and 2012. Other significant roles during this period included Dr. Pete in the Scottish crime-drama The Field of Blood in 2011, for which he received a BAFTA Scotland nomination, and Randall Brown in the BBC Two drama The Hour in 2012, which brought an additional BAFTA nomination.

From 2013 to 2017, Capaldi portrayed the twelfth incarnation of the Doctor in the science fiction series Doctor Who, a program he had been a fan of since childhood and whose fan club he had been an active member of while living in Bishopbriggs. He also played Mr. Curry in the family film Paddington in 2014 and its sequel Paddington 2 in 2017, and appeared as the Thinker in The Suicide Squad in 2021. His stage work has additionally included the role of Professor Marcus in The Ladykillers. Capaldi has received a BAFTA Scotland award for Outstanding Contribution to Film and Television. He wrote a rock album titled St. Christopher. He is married to actress Elaine Collins, and the couple have one child together.
