About
Perlita Neilson, born Margaret Phillipa Sowden on 11 June 1933 in Bradford, England, was an English actress whose career spanned film, stage, and television. She died on 7 April 2014 in Brighton at the age of 80.
Although Neilson was born in Bradford, her early years were spent in Argentina, where her father Wilson Sowden had relocated to work as an engineer. Her mother Isabella, née Gibson, returned to Buenos Aires following her birth, and it was there that Neilson attended stage school. She began performing at age nine as part of the British Community Players, a variety group. She later received formal training at the Aida Foster Theatre School.
Neilson's stage career brought her to Broadway in 1951, where she appeared in the musical Lace Petticoat. Among her most recognized stage work was her portrayal of Anne Frank in the 1957 London production of The Diary of Anne Frank.
In her personal life, Neilson married Bruce Sharman in 1956 in Surrey. She subsequently married Henry Neilson in 1961, also in Surrey.
