About

Alfred "Pepsi" Bethel was born on August 31, 1918, in Greensboro, North Carolina, and went on to become a jazz dancer, choreographer, and the founder of his own dance company. He died on August 30, 2002, in New York City, one day before his 84th birthday.

Bethel built the foundation of his career at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, where he performed dances including the Cakewalk, the Lindy Hop, and the Charleston. He also worked with the Mura Dehn Jazz Ballet and other companies before establishing the Pepsi Bethel Authentic Jazz Dance Theater in 1960. Among his choreographic works, he is recognized for creating the Lindy Hop jazz routine known as Tranky Doo.

His choreographic contributions were recognized in 1980 when his work was honored in Celebration of Men in Dance at the Thelma Hill Performing Arts Center in Brooklyn. In 1984, he staged the revue An Evening With Charles Cook and Friends at Aaron Davis Hall.

Bethel also served as a consultant and choreographer on multiple productions directed by Vernel Bagneris, including two stagings of One Mo' Time, as well as Staggerlee in 1987 and Jelly Roll! in 1994. That same year, 1987, he worked as a production consultant on Sing Hallelujah! at the Village Gate.
