About
Penny Downie is an Australian actress whose career spans stage and screen in both Australia and the United Kingdom. Born in Brisbane, Queensland, she trained at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Sydney, where she studied under theatre director Joan Whalley. Her early professional work took place in Brisbane at Twelfth Night Theatre and Brisbane Arts Theatre before she transitioned to television.
Following her graduation, Downie appeared in several Australian television series, including The Box, Bellbird, The Sullivans, Prisoner, and Learned Friends. She relocated to the United Kingdom in the early 1980s, and in 1984 took on the role of Dee Rogers in the Minder episode "If Money Be the Food of Love, Play On." Her subsequent British television work includes Inspector Morse, Kavanagh QC, The Inspector Lynley Mysteries, Spooks, New Tricks, and The Girl in the Cafe.
Downie is an associate artist of the Royal Shakespeare Company, with whom she has performed numerous roles. In the RSC's 1984 production of Richard III, featuring Antony Sher in the lead role, she played Lady Anne. She also portrayed both Hermione and Perdita in The Winter's Tale for the company. In 1986, she appeared in the premiere of Nick Dear's play The Art of Success in Stratford, a production that later transferred to the Barbican Theatre in London alongside Michael Kitchen and Simon Russell Beale. In 2008, she played Gertrude opposite David Tennant and Patrick Stewart in the RSC's production of Hamlet, which was subsequently adapted for BBC television and broadcast in late 2009. The following year, she took the title role in Euripides' Helen at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre.
Downie made her Broadway debut in 1996 in An Ideal Husband, for which she received the Theatre World Special Award that same year. On the West End, she played the title character in A Storm in a Flower Vase, a play based on the life of Constance Spry, which debuted at the Arts Theatre. In 2016, she appeared as Nat in Rabbit Hole at the Hampstead Theatre, replacing Alison Steadman. In 2019, she starred as Helen Alving in a Royal and Derngate production of Ibsen's Ghosts opposite James Wilby, and in 2021 she played Esther in The Lodger, which premiered at the Coronet Theatre in September of that year.
Her film work includes the role of Mrs. Pienaar in Clint Eastwood's 2009 film Invictus. In 2016, she portrayed Home Secretary Rose Kenter in the action thriller London Has Fallen and played Janet Lee Bouvier, mother of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, in Pablo Larraín's historical drama Jackie. That same year she appeared as Mrs. Sulzbach in the British-Canadian co-production Houdini and Doyle and as Lady Blackwood in three episodes of the BBC1 espionage drama The Secret Agent. In 2017, she had a supporting role as Tid in the biographical drama Breathe. In 2024, she appeared as Countess Rostova in four episodes of the British limited series A Gentleman in Moscow, based on the novel by Amor Towles, which premiered on Paramount+ on 29 March 2024.
Among her notable television roles, Downie played Lady Sinderby, mother of Atticus Aldridge, in series five of Downton Abbey in 2014, and Rev Mother Augustine in the Father Brown episode "The Bride of Christ" in 2013. From 2017 to 2021, she appeared as Ellen across two runs of the Channel 4 sitcom Back, playing the role in six episodes in 2017 and reprising it for a further six episodes in 2021. She starred as Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, in nine episodes of the Netflix series The Crown beginning in 2019, and in 2019 also played Valerie Chandris in three episodes of the American thriller series Absentia. Beginning in 2023, Downie has played Frances Munning, the US ambassador's house manager, in the Netflix political thriller series The Diplomat.
