About
Penelope Ann Miller, born Penelope Andrea Miller on January 13, 1964, in Los Angeles, California, is an American actress whose career has spanned Broadway, film, and television for four decades. Her mother, Beatrice, worked as a costume designer, publicist, and journalist and was both the goddaughter of businessman Aristotle Onassis and an editor of Harper's Bazaar. Her father, Mark Miller, was a television actor and producer. Miller has two sisters: Marisa, also a film actress, and Savannah, a social worker. After graduating from high school in Los Angeles, Miller attended Menlo College in Atherton, California, from 1981 to 1983, then relocated to New York City to study theatre at HB Studio.
Miller's professional stage career began in 1985 when she was cast opposite Matthew Broderick in the original Broadway production of Neil Simon's Biloxi Blues, a run that continued through 1986. She returned to Broadway in a revival of Our Town, portraying Emily, a performance that earned her both a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play and a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play, both in 1989. Her Broadway work also included a starring role in On the Waterfront, with her stage career spanning from 1985 to 1995.
Her transition to film began alongside her Broadway work. She appeared in small roles in Adventures in Babysitting (1987) and Big Top Pee-wee (1988), the latter casting her as Winnie Johnston, fiancée to Paul Reubens's Pee-wee Herman character. She reprised her stage role in the 1988 film adaptation of Biloxi Blues, again opposite Broderick. In 1990, Miller appeared in three major studio releases: The Freshman, in which she played the daughter of Marlon Brando's character alongside Broderick; Awakenings, in which she played Paula opposite Robert De Niro and Robin Williams; and Kindergarten Cop, in which she played a teacher hiding with her son from a criminal husband, alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger. That same year she appeared in Downtown, co-starring Anthony Edwards and Forest Whitaker. In 1991, she played a lawyer and stepdaughter to Gregory Peck's character in Other People's Money. The following year she portrayed Edna Purviance in Chaplin and appeared with Tim Daly in Year of the Comet. In 1993, her portrayal of exotic dancer Gail in Carlito's Way, as the love interest of Al Pacino's character, earned her a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She played Margo Lane opposite Alec Baldwin in The Shadow (1994) and took the lead role of Dr. Margo Green in the creature feature The Relic (1997).
Miller's film work continued across subsequent decades. In 1998, she portrayed teacher Barbara Henry in the Disney television film Ruby Bridges, about the first Black student to attend an all-white elementary school in New Orleans. She played Mary Kay Letourneau in the 2000 television film All-American Girl: The Mary Kay Letourneau Story. Her 2011 role as Doris, wife of Jean Dujardin's protagonist George Valentin, placed her in the Academy Award-winning film The Artist. She appeared in The Birth of a Nation in 2016. In 2024, she portrayed First Lady Nancy Reagan in the biographical film Reagan, opposite Dennis Quaid; the two received a Golden Raspberry Award nomination for Worst Screen Combo at the 45th ceremony.
On television, Miller starred as Molly Hooper on the Fox sitcom A Minute with Stan Hooper from 2003 to 2004 and held recurring roles on Men of a Certain Age from 2009 to 2011 and on Mistresses from 2013 to 2014. In 2015, she was cast as Eve Carlin in the first season of ABC's drama series American Crime. She co-starred as Joyce Dahmer in the Netflix series Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story in 2022. Earlier television appearances included a guest role in a 1987 episode of Miami Vice and a two-part appearance in A&E's A Nero Wolfe Mystery in 2002.
In her personal life, Miller married actor Will Arnett in 1994; they divorced in 1995. She married James Huggins in 2000, and the couple have two daughters together. Miller filed for legal separation from Huggins in March 2012 but withdrew that request in June 2012.
