About
Peggy Mondo, born Marguerite Gloria Mondo on August 12, 1927, in New Haven, Connecticut, was an American actress whose career spanned Broadway, film, and television. Of Italian ancestry, Mondo trained as an opera singer before transitioning to acting. Her parents were Vincent and Emma Mondo, née Spignesi; her father studied at the Yale School of Art and continued painting into his seventies, filling the family apartment with his work.
Mondo made her Broadway debut in the musical The Music Man, which opened in December 1957, and she later reprised her involvement in the 1962 film adaptation. She felt that her appearance in those productions had typecast her into roles defined by her weight, a pattern that would shape much of her subsequent career. Prior to accepting that trajectory, she had actively worked against it, at one point losing 54 pounds through strict dieting. By 1966, however, weighing approximately 250 pounds, Mondo had shifted her perspective and concluded that a distinct niche existed for actresses who did not conform to conventional Hollywood standards. She reasoned that competition for roles requiring thinner performers was intense and that losing weight might cost her work rather than expand her opportunities.
Her television career included recurring and guest appearances across multiple series. She appeared in 35 episodes of McHale's Navy and had a role in The Addams Family. In 1966 she made a guest appearance in the Western series Laredo, playing the daughter of an Indian chief. From 1969 to 1971 she was a regular cast member on the sitcom To Rome with Love, where she played Mama Vitale, an Italian landlady. She described the role as ideal for maintaining the figure the character required, and on one occasion prepared a baked lasagna lunch for approximately 61 members of the cast and crew.
Her film work included a notable physical scene in Who's Minding the Store?, in which she played a heavy wrestler and was required to leap over a sales counter onto a prosthetic dummy of co-star Jerry Lewis. Lewis did not move away quickly enough, and Mondo nearly landed on him directly. She reportedly weighed 200 pounds at the time of filming, though her appearance was amplified by knee pads and additional protective gear worn for the stunt. Her final professional performance, according to her obituary, was the role of cousin Tessie in the 1980 film Fatso.
In May 1962, Mondo married John Stevens. The couple lived in a ten-room Hollywood apartment decorated in an old-fashioned style and had no children. She was a close friend of actor Ernest Borgnine. Mondo died on February 19, 1991, of a heart attack at her Los Angeles home. She was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills and was survived by her brothers Peter, Louis, and Vincent.
