About

Margaret June Maley, known professionally as Peggy Maley, was born on June 8, 1923, in Port Carbon, Pennsylvania, and died on October 1, 2007. An American actress active across stage, film, and television, she was crowned Miss Atlantic City in 1942 at the age of eighteen or nineteen.

Maley's Broadway career spanned 1947 to 1948, during which she appeared in two productions: I Gotta Get Out (1947) and Joy to the World (1948). Her stage work earned her a Theatre World Award in 1948.

In film, Maley is perhaps best remembered for delivering the line "Hey, Johnny, what are you rebelling against?" to Marlon Brando in The Wild One, serving as the feeder for one of the film's most recognized exchanges.

Her television career ran for seven years, from 1953 to 1960. Her first appearance was as Diane Chandler in Ramar of the Jungle. She went on to make three appearances each on The Star and the Story, Dragnet starring Jack Webb, Richard Diamond, Private Detective, and Perry Mason starring Raymond Burr. Among her specific television roles, she played Lola Florey in the 1957 Perry Mason episode "The Case of the Silent Partner" and appeared as "The Blonde Woman" in the 1958 episode of The Walter Winchell File titled "The Reporter." She appeared in Private Secretary on January 10, 1954, and in the Wanted Dead or Alive episode "The Kovack Affair" with Steve McQueen, which originally aired on March 28, 1959. Her final television appearance came in 1960, when she played Verna in Lock-Up starring MacDonald Carey.

The daughter of James and Grace Maley, née Williams, she married garment manufacturer Ricky Rafield in 1952, though the marriage was annulled after twelve weeks. Her second marriage, to New York policeman Donald Schonbrunn in 1972, also eventually ended in dissolution.
