About

Peggy Dolan was an American actress and dancer who worked in theater and vaudeville during the 1920s, appearing on Broadway between 1919 and 1930. Born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hoffman Dolan, and her grandmother was Mrs. Thomas J. Dolan, née Isabel W. Hoffman, of Villanova, Pennsylvania.

Before establishing herself in theater, Dolan competed in a national beauty contest held in Universal City in June 1915, placing as third runner-up among sixty contestants. The winner, crowned the most beautiful girl in America, was Ruth M. Purcell of Washington, D.C.

Dolan's Broadway career encompassed both dramatic and musical productions. Her credits included the musical Love Birds, the revue George White's Scandals, the play The Red Robe, the musical Princess Charming, and The City. Her association with the George White organization began in June 1920, when she appeared with the company's Scandals of 1920 at the Globe Theater in New York City. That production featured music by George Gershwin with lyrics by Arthur Jackson, was produced by White and Andrew Rice, and was headed by White and Ann Pennington. The 1922 edition of George White's Scandals also appears among her verified Broadway credits. The Red Robe, an operatic comedy with players including Manilla Powers and Gloria Foy, was presented at the Shubert Theater in New Haven, Connecticut, before its Broadway debut in 1928.

Away from Broadway, Dolan acted in Truth, a production staged at the Sum-Toy-Sho Theater in Los Angeles in March 1926, playing the feminine lead opposite Edward Leiter and Joe Kearns. Decades later, in November 1958, she teamed with Nina Underwood to provide singing and dancing for an annual fashion show organized by the National Secretaries Association in Downey, California, with Autumn Leaves as the event's theme.

Dolan's name surfaced in a notable legal proceeding in March 1925, when she was mentioned during the New York Supreme Court trial of Franklyn Ardell, a singer and comedian who had worked with the George White revue. Ardell was dismissed by White after it was discovered he had been supplying chorus girls with alcoholic beverages on stage, in his dressing room, and at Dinty Moore's restaurant near the Globe Theater. Ardell sued White for $27,000, representing the earnings lost when his $600-per-week contract was terminated. Testimony from Katherine Chapman established that she had accompanied Dolan when Ardell invited Dolan to join him at a Long Island club, as Dolan did not wish to go alone. Ardell ultimately lost the suit.

In her personal life, Dolan moved in socially prominent circles. In January 1930, she was a guest of former New York governor Alfred E. Smith at a birthday dinner held for his son, Alfred E. Smith, Jr., at the Patio Lamaze in Palm Beach, Florida.
