About
Margaret Eleanor Conklin, known professionally as Peggy Conklin, was an American actress who worked across theatre, film, radio, and television. She was born on November 2, 1906, in Dobbs Ferry, New York. Her mother died when she was twelve, and she was subsequently raised by her two aunts. After completing high school, she relocated to New York City to pursue an acting career, beginning her training as a dancer.
Conklin made her Broadway debut in 1928 in Treasure Girl, where she performed as part of the chorus. She went on to take leading roles across a Broadway career that spanned three decades, from 1928 to 1958. Her stage credits included The Pursuit of Happiness, Miss Swan Expects, Mr. and Mrs. North, The Ghost Writer, Old Man Murphy, Alice in Arms, and The Wisteria Trees. Among her most prominent stage work were starring roles in Yes, My Darling Daughter and Co-respondent Unknown. She also appeared in The Petrified Forest. Her final Broadway credit was the play Howie, in which she played the role of Edith Simms.
Despite her extensive stage work, Conklin made only five films during her career. Her screen credits included The President Vanishes, the 1936 production Her Master's Voice alongside Edward Everett Horton, and Having Wonderful Time. She additionally worked in radio and television throughout her career.
Conklin died on March 18, 2003, at her home in Naples, Florida, at the age of 96.
