About
Pedro De Cordoba was an American actor born on September 28, 1881, in New York City, to Cuban and French parents. He died on September 16, 1950, at his home in the Sunland neighborhood of Los Angeles, at the age of 68. His remains are interred at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City.
Classically trained in theatre, De Cordoba built a Broadway career spanning from 1902 to 1934, appearing in productions that included Marie Antoinette, The Blue Bird, The Light of the World, Tiger Rose, and Antony and Cleopatra. His stage work brought him alongside prominent actresses including Jane Cowl and Katharine Cornell. In 1932, he took on the role of Collatine in the Broadway production of Lucrece. Despite the breadth of his theatrical work, De Cordoba acknowledged that performing on stage was his preference over film work, particularly during the silent era.
In 1913, De Cordoba was part of the resident summer stock cast at Elitch Theatre in Denver, Colorado. His film career began with Cecil B. DeMille's Carmen in 1915, after which he established himself as a leading man in Hollywood during the silent film period. When sound pictures arrived, his deeply resonant speaking voice suited him well for the new format, and he transitioned into character work in Hollywood from the mid-1930s onward. He was frequently cast as aristocratic or clerical figures of Hispanic origin, a pattern evident in his appearance in The Keys of the Kingdom in 1944. He also appeared in Alfred Hitchcock's Saboteur in 1942, playing a sideshow character described as a living skeleton who conceals fugitive Robert Cummings and Priscilla Lane in a carnival wagon.
De Cordoba married Antoinette Glover in 1917; she died in 1921. He married Eleanor M. Nolan in 1928, and together they had six children. A devout Catholic, he served for a period as president of the Catholic Actors Guild of America.
