About

Pauline Moore, born Pauline Joless Love on June 17, 1914, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, was an American actress whose career encompassed Broadway, Hollywood films, and modeling. She died on December 7, 2001, in Sequim, Washington, of Lou Gehrig's disease at the age of 87.

Moore's early life was shaped by the death of her father during World War I, after which her mother remarried in 1925 and Moore adopted her stepfather's surname. Her education took her to Darlington Seminary in West Chester, Pennsylvania, and William Penn High School in Harrisburg. Her first professional acting experience came through the Edna Preston stock theater company.

Her Broadway career ran from 1921 to 1934 and included six productions. The Easiest Way marked her earliest Broadway credit in 1921, followed by Man and the Masses in 1924, The Fountain in 1925, The Prisoner in 1927, Murder at the Vanities in 1933, and Dance With Your Gods in 1934. She was originally associated with Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in connection with her stage work.

In the early 1930s, Moore relocated to Hollywood, where she also worked as a model alongside her acting pursuits. Her film debut came in Frankenstein in 1931, and her screen career ultimately encompassed 30 films spanning from that first uncredited role through her final appearance in 1958. She was contracted to 20th Century Fox, for whom she made 24 films from the late 1930s through the early 1940s. Her notable film appearances included Heidi in 1937 alongside Shirley Temple and Young Mr. Lincoln in 1939 alongside Henry Fonda. She appeared in three Charlie Chan films, with co-stars including Cesar Romero, Allan Lane, and Kane Richmond. At Republic Pictures, she starred in four Roy Rogers westerns as well as the 1940 serial King of the Texas Rangers, which featured football player Sammy Baugh. Moore made several television appearances in the 1950s, among them a role in the 1957 production Spoilers of the Forest alongside Rod Cameron and Vera Ralston, before retiring from acting by her own choice.

In her personal life, Moore married cartoonist Jefferson Machamer in 1934. The marriage lasted until Machamer's death in 1960, and the couple had three children together. She married Rev. Dodd Watkins in 1962, and was widowed a second time upon his death in 1972.
