About

Pauline Flanagan (29 June 1925 – 28 June 2003) was an Irish-born actress whose stage career spanned decades in both the United States and the United Kingdom. Born in County Sligo, Ireland, to Patrick and Elizabeth (née Mulligan) Flanagan, she came from a politically active family: both parents supported the Republican Anti-Treaty side during the Irish Civil War and each served as Lord Mayor of Sligo. Flanagan maintained close friendships with fellow Irish actresses Joan O'Hara and Paddy Croft throughout her life.

In the early 1950s, Flanagan spent considerable time touring with Anew McMaster, an experience during which she encountered Harold Pinter at the Gate's Pinter Festival. She made her Broadway debut in 1957 in Dylan Thomas' Under Milk Wood, launching a stage presence in New York that would continue until 1994. Among her Broadway credits were the 1976 revival of The Innocents, a 1982 production of Medea, Corpse!, Steaming, and Philadelphia, Here I Come!, in which she appeared in 1994. Her performance in Medea earned her a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play in 1982.

Beyond Broadway, Flanagan was active in Off-Broadway work, frequently collaborating with the Irish Repertory Theatre. In February 1992 she appeared in Harold Prince's Grandchild of Kings at that company, a role that brought her an Outer Critics Circle Award nomination for Best Actress. She also appeared in Juno and the Paycock at the Irish Repertory Theatre in 1995 and performed in Yeats: A Celebration. Earlier Off-Broadway work included Summer, a play by Hugh Leonard staged at the Hudson Guild Theater under the direction of Brian Murray, which had premiered at the Olney Theatre in Maryland in August 1974.

American television audiences came to know Flanagan through the soap opera Ryan's Hope, on which she played Annie Colleary in 1979 and again in 1981, later returning to the series in the role of Sister Mary Joel. Her work extended to regional and international theatre as well. In 1997 she received the Barclays Theatre Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance in Jennifer Johnston's Desert Lullaby at the Lyric Theatre in Belfast, an award recognizing outstanding regional theatre across the United Kingdom. In 2001 she won the Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Frank McGuinness' Dolly West's Kitchen at the Old Vic.

A resident of Glen Rock, New Jersey, Flanagan married George Vogel in 1958 and was survived by him at the time of her death. She was also survived by a sister, Maura McNally, and two daughters, Melissa Brown and Jane Holtzen. Flanagan died on 28 June 2003 — one day before her 78th birthday — at The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, New Jersey, of heart failure while suffering from lung cancer.
