Born in Oakmont, Pennsylvania, to William Robinson Bauersmith and Susan (née Paul), she was educated in Waterbury, Connecticut, before enrolling at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, where she trained for the stage.
Bauersmith's first stage appearance came in 1929 while she was still a student at Carnegie Institute of Technology. Her New York City theatrical debut followed in October 1931, when she originated the role of Carmen Bracegirdle in Lean Harvest at the Forrest Theatre. Over the decades that followed, she accumulated credits in numerous Broadway productions, including Three-Cornered Moon (1933), 200 Were Chosen, Prelude, Bury the Dead (1936), On the Twentieth Century, Sail Away (1961), Breakfast at Tiffany's (1966), and The Piano Lesson.

She was also a regular contributor to the crossword puzzles published in The New York Times.
In her personal life, Bauersmith married Barnett M. Warren, who died in 1953. The couple had two children: a daughter, Jennifer Warren, who became an actress, and a son, Paul Warren, who became the dean of Boston University School of Education. Bauersmith died of cancer on August 6, 1987, at Saint Vincent's Catholic Medical Center in New York.
