About
Paul Whitsun-Jones (25 April 1923 – 14 January 1974) was a British character actor born in Newport, Monmouthshire. He received his education at Merchant Taylors' School in Northwood, Middlesex, before embarking on a professional acting career that spanned stage, television, and film.
Whitsun-Jones began his stage career in 1948 with a two-year engagement at York Repertory Theatre. He subsequently built a substantial presence in the West End, appearing at the Saville Theatre in The Moonraker in 1952 and at the Garrick Theatre in Dangerous Curves in 1953. From 1955 to 1957, he spent two years at the Stoll Theatre playing the Wazir in Kismet. In 1957, he made his Broadway appearance in the comedy The Country Wife. He later took on the role of Mr. Bumble in the original West End production of the musical Oliver! in 1960.
On television, his early credits included Street Scene, The Last Tycoon, Love from Italy, Berkeley Square, and Swedish Match King. He also appeared in a prominent role as journalist James Fullalove in the BBC science fiction serial The Quatermass Experiment. His television work continued with two Doctor Who stories: the role of Squire Edwards in The Smugglers in 1966 and the Marshal of Solos in The Mutants in 1972. He also appeared in two episodes of the series Department S in 1968 and 1969, A Cellar Full of Silence and Death on Reflection.
Whitsun-Jones married Joyce Winifred Rankine in 1949, with whom he had two children before the marriage ended in divorce. He subsequently married Sylvia E. Horswell, and they had two children together, including the actress Henrietta Whitsun-Jones. He died in London in January 1974 from appendicitis at the age of 50.
