Paul Shyre (March 8, 1926 – November 19, 1989) was a New York-born performer, book writer, director, and playwright whose Broadway career spanned from 1956 to 1977. He trained at the University of Florida and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and later served as a professor of theater arts at Cornell University.

Shyre is closely associated with bringing the work of Sean O'Casey to the stage. He adapted, directed, and co-produced three productions drawn from O'Casey's autobiographical novels: I Knock at the Door, Pictures in the Hallway, and Drums Under the Windows. His work on these adaptations earned him a 1957 Obie Award special citation for bringing O'Casey to Off-Broadway, as well as a Drama Desk Vernon Rice Award that same year for Pictures in the Hallway. Also in 1957, he received a Special Tony Award in recognition of his contributions to the theater.

Among his other writing credits, Shyre authored the plays Hizzoner! and Will Rogers' USA, both of which appeared in his Broadway credits alongside Saint Joan. He also wrote and directed A Whitman Portrait and An Unpleasant Evening With H.L. Mencken. The President Is Dead is an additional play associated with his body of work as a playwright.

Later in his career, Shyre co-wrote Hizzoner!, a play about Mayor Fiorello La Guardia, with Robert H. Rines. The production was developed for television before moving to Broadway, and the two shared a New York Emmy Award for the project in 1987.
