About

Paul Cavanagh, born William Grigs Atkinson on 8 December 1888 in Felling, Durham, was an English actor who worked extensively in both film and stage. He pursued his education at the Royal Grammar School in Newcastle upon Tyne before attending Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he earned a master of arts degree. His academic record included high honors in mathematics and history. Following his studies, Cavanagh trained and practiced law in England for several years before a series of life changes redirected his path entirely.

Before entering the entertainment industry, Cavanagh led a varied early life. He traveled to Canada for a period of sightseeing and spent nine months serving with the Royal North-West Mounted Police. After his service in World War I, he returned to Canada and resumed legal work, which included revising the statutes of Alberta, before eventually returning to England to continue practicing law. A financial setback in 1924 depleted his savings and prompted him to consider a new profession.

His entry into the theater came through an unlikely sequence of events. In 1926, Cavanagh lost $22,000 in a single evening at a roulette wheel in Monte Carlo. An observer present that night offered him a letter of introduction to theatrical contacts in London, which led directly to his casting in Walter Hackett's It Pays to Advertise. He subsequently appeared in Eden Phillpotts' Blue Comet in the West End, establishing his stage credentials in Britain before transitioning to film.

After appearing in a number of British silent films, Cavanagh relocated to the United States. He signed his first American film contract with Paramount Pictures in 1929, the same year he made his Broadway appearance in the play Scotland Yard. Over the course of his screen career, he appeared in more than 100 films between 1928 and 1959.

Cavanagh died of a heart attack in London on 15 March 1964 at the age of 75. He is buried at Lorraine Park Cemetery in Baltimore, Maryland.
