About
Paul Alexander Nolan is a Canadian actor and singer who was born and raised in Rouleau, Saskatchewan, a small farming community. From an early age he developed an interest in music through exposure to folk, opera, show tunes, and classical music. He performed in musicals and received vocal training at Rouleau School before going on to study at the Randolph College for the Performing Arts. After completing his studies, he worked as a performer with Disney Cruise Line.
Nolan launched his professional stage career in 2001 when he appeared in the ensemble of the Canadian production of Mamma Mia!, which ran at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto. He made his debut with the Stratford Festival during its 2007 season, playing Slim in Oklahoma!, and returned in 2009 to star as Tony in West Side Story. The following year he played Orlando in the Festival's production of As You Like It. During the 2013 Stratford season he appeared in two productions, taking on the roles of Fyedka in Fiddler on the Roof and Cousin Kevin in The Who's Tommy. Across his time with the company, Nolan appeared in nine Stratford Festival productions in total.
His Broadway debut came in 2012, when he reprised the role of Jesus in the revival of Jesus Christ Superstar at the Neil Simon Theatre. He had originated that role at the Stratford Festival in 2011, and the production subsequently had a pre-Broadway engagement at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego before transferring to New York. In December 2013, Nolan joined the cast of Once, playing Guy, and remained with the show until it closed in January 2015. During that same period he also played Pasha Antipov in the original Broadway production of Doctor Zhivago at the Broadway Theatre.
Nolan originated the role of Jimmy Ray Dobbs in Bright Star, which had a pre-Broadway engagement at the Kennedy Center before opening at the Cort Theatre on Broadway, where it ran for four months and closed on June 26, 2016. His performance earned him a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical in 2016. Following the close of Bright Star, he played Billy Flynn in Chicago for several weeks. He then starred as Tully in the world premiere of Escape to Margaritaville, a jukebox musical based on the songs of Jimmy Buffett, which began at the La Jolla Playhouse in 2017. He reprised the role through pre-Broadway engagements in New Orleans, Houston, and Chicago before the production opened at the Marquis Theatre on Broadway.
In 2018, Nolan originated the role of Jim in the world premiere of Slave Play, a three-act play by Jeremy O. Harris, which premiered off-Broadway at the New York Theatre Workshop. He reprised the role when the play transferred to Broadway at the John Golden Theatre for a limited engagement running from October 6, 2019, to January 19, 2020. He returned to the role again when the production was remounted on Broadway at the August Wilson Theatre in 2021, and subsequently appeared in the Los Angeles production at the Mark Taper Forum in 2022.
Also in 2022, Nolan starred in the world premiere of the musical Knoxville and appeared as Frank Carter in the musical Life After at the Goodman Theatre, which ran from June 11 to July 17, 2022. He played Hugh Dorsey in New York City Center's production of Parade, then reprised the role when the production transferred to Broadway at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre for a limited engagement between February 22, 2023, and August 6, 2023. He also participated in a staged industry reading of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, based on the novel of the same name.
In 2024, Nolan originated the role of August Rackinger and Charlie O'Brien in the Broadway musical adaptation of Water for Elephants, which began previews at the Imperial Theatre on February 24, 2024, and officially opened on March 21, 2024. His Broadway career spans from 1996 to 2026, with starring roles across productions including Escape to Margaritaville, Bright Star, and Doctor Zhivago, as well as appearances in Slave Play, Water for Elephants, and The Lost Boys, among others.
