About

Patty McCormack, born Patricia Ellen Russo on August 21, 1945, in New York City, is an American actress whose career has spanned theater, film, and television. Originally from Brooklyn, she took her maternal grandmother's surname after her parents divorced when she was young. Her father, Frank Russo, was a fireman and a friend of Walter Matthau, who arranged for McCormack to sign with his agent, Leonard Hirshan, as a favor to the family. She attended New Utrecht High School in 1958.

McCormack began performing as a child, making her motion-picture debut in Two Gals and a Guy in 1951. She appeared as Ingeborg in the television series Mama with Peggy Wood from 1953 to 1956. Her Broadway career began in 1953 with Touchstone, and the following year she originated the role of Rhoda Penmark in Maxwell Anderson's psychological drama The Bad Seed, appearing alongside Nancy Kelly. The role cast her as an eight-year-old psychopathic serial killer and brought her significant critical recognition. When Mervyn LeRoy directed the 1956 film adaptation, McCormack reprised the role and received nominations for both an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress. On March 20, 1956, she was presented with the Milky Way Gold Star Award as the most outstanding juvenile performer. In 1960, at age fifteen, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6312 Hollywood Boulevard, becoming the youngest honoree in that distinction at the time.

In 1957, McCormack portrayed Helen Keller in the original Playhouse 90 television production of William Gibson's The Miracle Worker, opposite Teresa Wright. She played a pampered child star in the 1958 comedy Kathy O' and recorded the title song for Dot Records. The following year she briefly headlined her own series, Peck's Bad Girl, with Marsha Hunt and Wendell Corey, and appeared in an episode of One Step Beyond titled Make Me Not a Witch. She also took a leading role in MGM's remake of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn with Eddie Hodges. In the early 1960s she appeared in a series of teenage delinquent films, including The Explosive Generation with William Shatner and The Young Runaways. She made two appearances on Rawhide, portraying Julie Cannon in the 1962 episode Incident of the Wolvers and Sarah Higgins in the 1963 episode Incident at Paradise.

McCormack continued working steadily in television throughout the 1960s and 1970s. In 1970 she played Linda Warren on the soap opera The Best of Everything. She guest-starred on The Streets of San Francisco and appeared in two episodes of Emergency! as a San Francisco paramedic. She returned to film in 1975 with Bug and appeared in a 1978 episode of The Love Boat as advertising executive Beth Donaldson. From 1979 to 1980 she starred as Anne Brookes, wife of Jeffrey P. Brookes III played by Jeffrey Tambor, on the ABC sitcom The Ropers, a spin-off of Three's Company. She also held a temporary role on the CBS soap opera As the World Turns, filling in for Kathryn Hays during an extended absence. McCormack held recurring roles on Dallas, Murder She Wrote, and The Sopranos, where she played Adriana La Cerva's mother.

She starred in the cult thriller Mommy and its 1997 sequel Mommy 2: Mommy's Day, and in 2008 portrayed First Lady Pat Nixon in the feature film Frost/Nixon. She appeared in Paul Thomas Anderson's film The Master and had a guest role in a 2013 episode of Hart of Dixie, as well as a role in the 2014 film Chicanery. She costarred in the 2012 series Have You Met Miss Jones? In April 2018 she joined the cast of General Hospital, temporarily replacing Leslie Charleson as Monica Quartermaine following an injury Charleson sustained in a fall. In September 2018 she appeared in the television remake of The Bad Seed as Dr. March, a child psychiatrist. McCormack starred in Dan Lauria's play Just Another Day in 2023 at Ellenville, New York, in 2024 at the off-Broadway venue Theater555, and in 2025 at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland.
