About

Patti Karr, born Patsy Lou Karkalits on July 10, 1932, in Saint Paul, Minnesota, was an American actress, dancer, and singer whose career spanned Broadway, film, and television. The daughter of Charles F. Karkalits and Estelle Klebold Karkalits, she lost her mother in infancy and was raised in Fort Worth, Texas. She graduated from Paschal High School and attended Texas Christian University. Her early performing experience came through dance, beginning with the corps de ballet of the Fort Worth Civic Opera and extending to work with the Pittsburgh Light Opera and the Summertime Opera Company in Houston.

Karr made her Broadway debut in 1953 as a dancer in Maggie, the same year she appeared in Carnival in Flanders. Over the following four decades, she accumulated credits in more than twenty Broadway productions, the majority of them musicals. Her appearances included Pipe Dream, Bells Are Ringing, The Body Beautiful, Redhead, Once Upon a Mattress, Bye Bye Birdie, Do Re Mi, Look to the Lilies, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Different Times, Seesaw, Irene, Pippin, A Broadway Musical, and Musical Chairs. Her Broadway career extended to 1993, when she appeared in the revival of My Fair Lady. Throughout much of this work, Karr served as understudy to prominent stars including Chita Rivera, Carol Burnett, Michele Lee, Nancy Walker, and Gwen Verdon. In 1965, she played Anita in a production of West Side Story during a nine-week tour of Japan.

Beyond Broadway, Karr worked in off-Broadway productions and national touring companies. Her film appearances included small roles in Woody Allen's Mighty Aphrodite in 1995, Our Italian Husband in 2006, and The Savages in 2007. On television, she had recurring presence in the soap operas Ryan's Hope, All My Children, Guiding Light, and The Edge of Night, along with guest roles on numerous other series. She portrayed three separate characters across the Law & Order franchise. Her final television credit came in 2007, when she appeared as a diner patron in the concluding scene of The Sopranos' final episode, "Made in America."

Karr resided on West End Avenue in New York City. In 2017, she sustained injuries when strong winds lifted a discarded Christmas tree from the curb and struck her in the face while she was walking her dog near her home. She died on July 11, 2020, one day after her 88th birthday.
