Patrick Tovatt

Patrick Tovatt is an American actor born on December 11, 1940, in Garrett Ridge, Colorado. He attended Burris Laboratory School in Muncie, Indiana, before going on to Harvard University, from which he later transferred to Antioch College, where he studied playwriting. He also pursued directing studies at the London Film School.

Tovatt's stage career encompasses both regional and Broadway work spanning several decades. He was a member of the original company of the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco and logged 14 seasons at the Actors Theatre of Louisville. He also served as a founding director of the Virginia Stage Company in Norfolk, Virginia. His Broadway appearances ran from 1988 to 2000 and included the drama Our Town, Copenhagen, and Proof.

On television, Tovatt built a substantial presence in daytime drama. He portrayed Zane Lindquist on Another World from 1985 to 1986, followed by the role of Matt McCleary on Search for Tomorrow in 1986. His longest-running daytime role was Cal Stricklyn on As the World Turns, which he played from 1988 to 1998 and again in 2001. That performance earned him a Daytime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in 1994. His earlier television work included two appearances on The Virginian in 1969 and 1970, and a guest role on Designing Women in 1988.

Tovatt has since retired to Grants Pass, Oregon.
