About
Patrick Hines (March 17, 1930 – August 12, 1985) was an American actor born in Burkeville, Texas, who built a career as a character actor on Broadway and in film spanning several decades. He died of a heart attack in Manhattan at the age of 55.
Hines made his Broadway debut in 1957 as Friar Pete in a production of Measure for Measure that also featured Norman Lloyd and Ellis Rabb. Over the following decades he accumulated a range of stage credits, including roles in The Iceman Cometh alongside Jason Robards Jr. and The Devils. He appeared with Rex Harrison in the 1979 Broadway revival of George Bernard Shaw's Caesar and Cleopatra, playing the role of Pothinus. Hines also starred in A Texas Trilogy: The Last Meeting of the Knights of the White Magnolia and appeared in A Texas Trilogy: Lu Ann Hampton Laverty Oberlander. His Broadway work continued through 1980, encompassing productions such as 1776 and Amadeus, in which he created the role of Orsini-Rosenberg in the original New York production. Prior to Amadeus reaching Broadway, Hines had appeared at the Kennedy Center in 1972 during the tryout of Pippin, playing the Abbot in the monastery sequence; that sequence was cut during previews, and he departed the production before it transferred to Broadway.
On screen, Hines portrayed Samuel Chase in the film adaptation of 1776 and was perhaps most widely recognized for his performance as Kapellmeister Giuseppe Bonno in the 1984 film Amadeus. Additional film credits include The Brink's Job, Bloodrage, and A Passage to India.
