About

Patricia Kirkland (July 18, 1925 – August 14, 2000) was an American actress born in New York City, the daughter of playwright Jack Kirkland and actress Nancy Carroll. Although she grew up primarily in Hollywood, her family moved frequently among California, New York, and a farm in Pennsylvania. Kirkland did not pursue formal acting training, later describing her education in the craft as learning on the job. She did study French, Spanish, dancing, and singing, though she concluded that singing was not among her strengths.

Kirkland's stage work began before she completed high school, when she appeared in Susan and God at the Bucks County Playhouse in Pennsylvania. While still a senior, she played the title role on the Meet Corliss Archer radio series before the program relocated to the West Coast. Her first stage appearance in Philadelphia, also in Susan and God, came at age seventeen. Following graduation, she returned to the role of Corliss Archer in the Chicago company of Kiss and Tell, a production that became the top box-office attraction in that city. Associated Press writer John S. Robling noted that her performance carried "the explosive quality of a star shell." At eighteen, columnist Alice Hughes identified Kirkland as "the belle of the new bunch" of actors and actresses working in summer stock, where she was then playing the fifteen-year-old daughter of divorced parents in For Keeps.

Her Broadway career spanned 1944 to 1948 and included the productions For Keeps, Snafu, Round Trip, You Never Can Tell, Magdalena, and The Young and Fair. A pivotal credit came through Years Ago, in which she played the young Ruth Gordon. The casting followed directly from Kirkland's work during the summer of 1946 with Helen Hayes's company in Alice Sit-by-the-Fire, where Gordon saw her perform and subsequently signed her for the role. A reviewer writing in The Sydney Morning Herald observed that Kirkland brought "a delightful spirit of freshness and anxious youthful questing" to the part.

Beyond the stage, Kirkland was named Favorite TV Daytime Serial Actress in the Radio-TV Mirror Awards for 1951–52. Her television appearances included Ford Theatre, TV Soundstage, Suspense, and The Egg and I. After she retired from performing, she transitioned to the business side of the industry, working as an agent and becoming casting director at CBS in 1971.

Kirkland also engaged in philanthropic work connected to the theatrical community. She and actress Bethel Leslie co-chaired the Mary MacArthur Memorial Committee, which raised funds for research and treatment of respiratory polio following the death of Mary MacArthur — daughter of Charles MacArthur and Helen Hayes — in September 1949. The committee's efforts were administered through the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. Its first project was a respirator research center added to the Children's Medical Center in Boston, dedicated by Helen Hayes on November 19, 1950. By January 1952, contributions from the theatrical community had surpassed $100,000, and additional research centers had been established in Ann Arbor, Houston, and Los Angeles.

In November 1948, Kirkland married Donald Bevan, an artist and playwright. The couple kept the marriage private for several months while navigating a housing shortage, each continuing to room with a friend until an apartment became available. They had four children. Kirkland died on August 14, 2000, in Los Angeles, California.
