Stevens appeared on Broadway between 1964 and 1968, with credits including the play Cactus Flower and the musical Hello, Dolly! Following her stage work, she built a substantial television presence, most notably on the long-running series M*A*S*H, where she appeared in 15 non-consecutive episodes from 1974 through 1978. Her character was credited under several different names throughout her run on the show, including Nurse Mitchell, Nurse Baker, Nurse Stevens, Nurse Brown, and Nurse Able. She returned to the role of Nurse Baker in the Season Five episode "Margaret's Marriage" and made a final appearance in the Season Seven episode "Major Ego," where she was credited as a Duty Nurse.
Concurrent with her television work, Stevens provided the voice of Velma Dinkley on two Saturday morning animated series, The Scooby-Doo Show and Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo, from 1976 to 1979. She departed the role partway through the latter series.
In 1980, Stevens married actor Jess Nadelman, with whom she had two children, Sara and David. She later left acting to work in education, where she focused on integrating art into curricula for elementary and secondary school teachers, incorporating subjects including science and history.
