About

Pat Somerset, born Patrick Holme-Sumner on 28 February 1897, was an English stage and film actor who died on 20 April 1974. He began his career appearing in British silent films before relocating to the United States, where he pursued work on both Broadway and in Hollywood.

Somerset's Broadway career spanned from 1922 to 1924 and encompassed three productions. His first New York stage appearance came in 1922, when he took on the role of Lawyer Brassac in Orange Blossoms, a musical composed by Victor Herbert. The following year he appeared as Evan Carruthers in The Dancers, and in 1924 he played Basil Owen in The Outsider.

After establishing himself on the New York stage, Somerset shifted his focus to Hollywood, where he worked steadily through the 1920s and 1930s. His screen roles were largely confined to supporting parts and bit appearances across a large number of films. Among his credits were One of the Bravest (1925), Paris (1926), The Black Watch (1929), Hell's Angels (1930), Body and Soul (1931), Christopher Strong (1933), The Gilded Lily (1935), and Mary of Scotland (1936). He became a recurring presence within the John Ford Stock Company, ultimately appearing in nine films directed by Ford, among them Wee Willie Winkie (1937) and Parnell (1937).

Somerset was married twice to actresses, his wives being Edith Day and Margaret Bannerman.
