Kiernan began his career in broadcasting in 1988 at CKRA-FM in Edmonton while enrolled as a business student at the University of Alberta. He subsequently transitioned from radio to television at Edmonton's CFRN News before moving to CITV in 1993, where he produced the weekday primetime newscast. In 1996, he relocated to New York City to work for Time Warner, and he has anchored NY1's morning programming since the following year, typically broadcasting from 5 AM to 10 AM on weekdays. He also serves as a correspondent for Canada's Business News Network.

Between 2000 and 2004, Kiernan co-anchored the CNNfn program The Money Gang alongside Christine Romans, Amanda Lang, and Ali Velshi. In 2008, he launched Pat's Papers, a website curating notable stories from newspapers across the United States. He is particularly recognized in New York City for his NY1 segment "In the Papers," in which he presents highlights from the city's daily newspapers with a deadpan delivery. In January 2014, he added an afternoon radio program to his schedule, hosting a weeknight news and talk show on WABC, a role he held until early 2015. He joined Bloomberg TV Canada in 2015 as host of the Thursday night program Bloomberg North, a half-hour review of global business news from a Canadian perspective.

Kiernan has hosted several game shows, all produced by Michael Davies. These include Studio 7, which aired on The WB Television Network in the summer of 2004; two seasons of The World Series of Pop Culture on VH1, beginning in July 2006 and July 2007; and the U.S. version of Grand Slam on GSN, which premiered on August 4, 2007, for which he served as the off-screen questioner. In May 2013, he joined CNBC's Crowd Rules as a co-host of the small business competition series.

Kiernan has appeared in a number of films in cameo roles, including The Interpreter (2005), Night at the Museum (2006), True North (2006), The Son of No One (2011), Iron Man 3 (2013), and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014). On March 7, 2012, he served as guest co-host alongside Kelly Ripa on Live! with Kelly. His first children's book, Good Morning, City, was published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in 2016 and draws on his early morning commute to NY1. In 2013, Canada's Report on Business included him on its list of "16 Canadians We Want Back."

Kiernan married Dawn Lerohl on June 4, 1994, and the couple relocated to Manhattan in 1996. Both hold dual citizenship in the United States and Canada.
